Single Spies is the collective name for an espionage double bill of one-act plays about the two most infamous spies of the 20th century, Guy Burgess and Sir Anthony Blunt.
As members of the 'Cambridge Five' – the spy ring recruited at Cambridge University in the 1930s – they spied for Russia during and immediately after World War II.
An Englishman Abroad, is centred on a meeting between Burgess, who had fled to Russia, and Coral Browne, a leading actress appearing with the Royal Shakespeare
Company on an exchange visit to Moscow. Overjoyed to see someone from his former life in England, the play chronicles the pair's fleeting friendship and Burgess' attempts to cling to his way of life as a Soviet citizen.
A Question of Attribution, follows Sir Anthony Blunt working as Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures. Perfectly at home in Buckingham Palace, he frequently encounters
Her Majesty and has a special fondness for one particular Titian. However, there is one small problem: the painting, like Blunt himself, is a fake. Is the Queen aware that her enigmatic servant might also be other than he seems?
Both Burgess and Blunt were part of the Establishment and the plays are not only highly entertaining but also raise questions about whom you should be loyal to, your country or your tribe.
Single Spies ist das Doppelprogramm bestehend aus zwei Spionage-Einaktern über die zwei berüchtigtsten Spione des 20. Jahrhunderts, Guy Burgess und Sir Anthony Blunt.
Als Mitglieder der „Cambridge Five“ – ein Spionagering, der in den 1930er Jahren an der Universität Cambridge rekrutiert wurde – spionierten sie während und unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg für Russland.
An Englishman Abroad handelt von der Begegnung zwischen Guy Burgess, der nach Russland geflohen ist, und Coral Browne, einer renommierten Schauspielerin der Royal Shakespeare Company,
die im Rahmen eines Kulturaustauschs in Moskau gastiert. Überglücklich, jemanden aus seiner früheren englischen Lebenswelt wiederzutreffen, zeichnet das Stück die kurze, intensive Annäherung der beiden nach und zeigt Burgess’ zugleich tragikomische Versuche, an seiner Rolle als sowjetischer Staatsbürger und an den Resten seiner früheren Identität festzuhalten.
A Question of Attribution begleitet Sir Anthony Blunt in seiner Funktion als Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures. Ganz selbstverständlich bewegt er sich im Buckingham Palace,
begegnet regelmäßig der Königin und hegt eine besondere Vorliebe für einen bestimmten Tizian. Doch es gibt ein Problem: Das Gemälde ist – wie Blunt selbst – eine Fälschung.
Ist sich die Königin bewusst, dass auch ihr rätselhafter Diener möglicherweise nicht der ist, der er zu sein scheint?
